Dear Professor Winston
I am 45 have an 11 year old son conceived naturally. I am keen to try IVF but am being encouraged to use donor eggs. My AMH is 5 FSH 6, I know the statistics are low but is there any chance using my own eggs? Many thanks,
M

Dear M,
Irrespective of the AMH and FSH level, your chances are no more than 2%, or just possibly 3% of a child – and if you have already been trying naturally without success, probably lower than that. Moreover in your age group approximately 50% of pregnancies will end in miscarriage. Your own eggs also carry around 1:80 chance of a baby with trisomy 21 (Downs syndrome).
Best wishes
Robert Winston
